painting texture an important part of each artwork

deatil of dirtfish painitng

texture is one of the most imortant aspects to my artworks and it is also the hardest part to get accross through a picture but per haps if a explain the process a little you'll better understand what is going on. each painting is but up as a series of layers the 1st is normaly something dark this is usualy to get the ball rolling so it is very rough the and endes up setting the tone for how much texture is going to run accross the whole painting. the next layers are to build up the character and colours these can be as few is 3 or 4 but as many as 10 and sometimes more. At this stage the painting is a mess of usually bright colours and abstract characters. the final stage is to work my way back through the layers to reveal the final product. sometimes in a painting i might repeat the building up and scraping back many times before i get the tone right.

new painting with new crew vs poo

dirtfish painting toe 2009

this painting gives joy to people. it's inspired by a dog who live in an apartment next to us when we live in Richmond, we called him mr whippy some times affectionately and some times in vain. this painting goes some of the way to explain the smile on the dogs face when his carefully laid trap was sprung. As a side note when we exhibited this work earlier this year it provoked some really cool reactions from people 2 little kids in particular saw it ran away laughing and kept coming back to check to see it it was real.

Face Facts - a painting for my 2009 collection of new characters

face_facts__2009_paintings-on-canvas

These 2 characters are among some of my favorite from the new series. the painting is done on canvas in 3 panels. I chose to do it this way so that i could break it up and hang different pieces around the house and still have the link to the whole work. At the moment I have the square middle section hanging with some other artworks in the office.

Back to making canvases

I have spent the last 5 week overseas putting it all together. Now I'm back at making new artworks for you guys. I have some new heros and it was great to see some original artworks by some old ones.

New artists to admire...

Luca Pignatelli is a new favorite artist we saw wok in Nice at a solo exhibition that he had at the Nice modern art gallery called 'atlantis' he uses a similar ideas to me in the way he uses paint and ink. The scale of his work was also very impressive, in this exhibition he had painted around 572 artworks and arranged them around the room in a grid 13x44.

Old artist to have a closer look at.

As an artist looking at art i can get bogged down in how they are made. I saw many paintings and artworks that were done by artists that I had only seen in books or reproductions. Seeing them in the flesh I was able to get right up close and see all the details of how they were made and all there imperfections.

I'll tell you more soon about what i have seen but for now I have to put it all into practice and create some more new artworks of my own.

I also wanted to remind you we have paintings of sale through this site and if you want to ask me any questions about the work this is your chance to talk directly with the artist that made the artworks.
